Looking to volunteer with youth within our community?
PPL is looking for an energetic volunteer with an interest in working with diverse communities to support youth programs at PPL. We're looking at launching a drop-in homework help session and would love to have 1-2 volunteers committed to weekly support the youth on-site. This volunteer opportunity is great for someone who enjoys working with youth and has experience with tutoring Middle School & High School age students.
Location: The Williams, 892 7th St E, St Paul, MN 55106
Days and times: Thursdays beginning October 1st, 2026. The tutoring time frame will be 4:00-5:00pm during the school year.
Volunteers would need to be able to check in before the 4:00pm start time.
More information: PPL Youth Tutoring gives students the extra academic support they need to build confidence and succeed in school. Because consistency is an important part of student success, we encourage volunteers to commit to a longer-term schedule whenever possible. Seeing the same tutor each week helps build trusting relationships, creates a stable learning environment, and allows volunteers to make a more meaningful impact on the youth and community they serve.
Depending on the student's needs, volunteers may help with:

Homework assistance across subjects such as math, science, english/language arts, social studies, or electives.
- Reading and writing support, including reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, essay writing, and research projects.
- Math practice, from pre-algebra and algebra to geometry and other high school math concepts.
- Study skills, such as organization, note-taking, time management, preparing for quizzes and tests, and breaking larger assignments into manageable steps.
- Technology support, including navigating Google Classroom, school portals, or educational websites.
- Encouragement and accountability by celebrating progress, helping students stay motivated, and reinforcing a growth mindset.
For a PPL-style after-school tutoring program, volunteers are generally not expected to be teachers or subject-matter experts. The emphasis is often on:
- Helping students understand assignments rather than giving them the answers.
- Asking questions that encourage critical thinking.
- Providing a supportive, patient, and welcoming environment.

Building a consistent relationship with students over time.

Interest in working across age groups and interest areas.
Ability to work independently and maintain consistent weekly attendance.
Commitment to empowering others by sharing your skills and knowledge.
Passion for working with youth from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Comfortable interacting with parents/guardians to support youth success.
